With three weeks of rest due to winter break, the Walden Grove Red Wolves traveled North into Tucson to take on a great Pueblo Magnet Junior Varsity team.
“In the last three weeks, we had a lot of things to work on” said Coach Carl Nelson. “We worked on breaking presses, physical lay-ups and playing a tough defense. We showed great improvement but were unable to overcome a rough second quarter.”
The Lady Red Wolves broke out to a quick lead with Freshmen Victoria Palacios hitting 1-2 of her opening free throws. Followed by a Norely Acosta lay up through traffic the Red Wolves, accompanied by their great defense finished the quarter 3-2. “I felt that our work in the previous practices really helped us out a lot” said Acosta. “We are playing better basketball and it showed.”
The Red Wolves came out in a man-press against the revamped Pueblo Magnet. Sophomore Ryan Gilvin would score 5 of her total 13 points in the second quarter making two layups and going 1-2 from the free throw line. To counter, the Pueblo Magnet came out with a stud line up and scored a total of 17 points in the second quarter alone, breaking the weak press to pieces. The quarter would be best summed up by team captain Ayah Ghannam: “we were in the press too long. They beat us hitting three pointers.” Ghannam was right. Pueblo would score 9 of their 17 points from beyond the arc.
With the second half adjustments in place, the Red Wolves came out ready to play. Playing tough defense and helping each other out was the name of the game for the second quarter. Run the set plays and execute on the job at hand was going to be important. The Red Wolves outscored Pueblo 22-18 in the second half only to fall short by the final buzzer 45-49. The Red Wolves went 3-12 from the free throw line in the game.
Ayah Ghannam went 0-2 from the line but made a basket giving her two points in the game.
Freshmen Brandy Quintana scored 4 of her 6 total points in the second half. Quintana also went 0-2 from the free throw line.
Forward Victoria Palacios scored a total of 4 points hitting a 3-pointer to pull the Red Wolves back into the game. Palacios went 1-4 from the free throw line.
Team captain Norely Acosta scored 5 points in the outing including going 1-2 from the free throw line.
The team’s lone Junior, Alina Ambrocio, snagged a few rebounds and scored a bucket. Ambrocio has scored in the last two games giving her 4 total points on the season.
The Red Wolves return home for regional game against Douglas High School on Thursday January 10, 2019.
