The Sahuarita Unified School District, Walden Grove High School, and Sahuarita High School will begin the “Return to Play” Phase 1 on Monday, August 17th. The Phase 1 plan is designed to follow all State, County, AIA, NFHS, and CDC Guidelines. These protocols, which are detailed below, have been created for the district the past few months by Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzuela, Principal Dr. Teresa Hill, Principal John Kneup, Athletic Director Chip Stratton, and Athletic Director Barry Cromer, with guidance from District Nurse Jeanine Sarnacki, and all athletic trainers and coaches in the Sahuarita District.
Phase 1 will begin for only Varsity Fall Sports, with small groups consisting of 10 athletes and one coach per field, per time slot. Athletes that are sick, have been exposed to someone that is sick, showing symptoms of COVID-19, and/or high risk or live with someone that is high risk, are asked to stay home until safe to return. All Phase 1 workouts are voluntary. All participants will arrive in appropriate attire for the workout, wearing a mask, and carrying their own, individual water bottle, with at least a gallon of water. Before the group goes onto their designated practice field, they will have a health screening survey completed, the “Return to Play” pledge signed, and will have their temperature taken and recorded for each program. All athletes will be socially distanced at least 6 feet of distance at all time. All workouts in Phase 1 will be outside, and will focus on individual conditioning, individual strength, and to acclimate to the heat, as outlined by AIA Bylaws. All workouts and Phases are subject to change due to changes in the pandemic, and will follow all Pima County Health Matrices.
During the Phase’s process, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO SHARING of water bottles, equipment, etc. throughout groups. All groups will be the same during Phase 1, which means the athletes will not be moved to a different group once they begin the Phase. All workouts will have hand sanitizer for coaches and athletes to use at anytime to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The athletes and coaches will not use the gyms, locker rooms, or weight room at anytime during Phase 1. The training room will not be in use for ordinary issues, but will be open for injuries deemed by the Athletic Trainer to be necessary to assess and treat the injured athletes. There will be not equipment in use in Phase 1 and there will not be centralized water use for the athletes. Parent’s are asked to stay behind all fencing of the practice fields and are encouraged to remain in their vehicles in the parking lots if they decide to wait for their students. No practice will be longer than 2 hours in length for any sport.
Physicals from 2019-2020 school year for all returning Red Wolves Athletes can be used this year; however, the Past History Section of the physical packet must be completed and uploaded to Register My Athlete before the official start date of each fall sport. If an athlete was injured and not cleared by a medical professional before the school closures in March, they will need to get a new physical for this season. If an incoming Freshman had a physical done on the 2019-2020 AIA Physical paperwork, you will need to contact the middle school to get the physical and you may upload that into the Register My Athlete portal. If you are new to athletics or to Walden Grove High School for the 2020-2021 school season, you will need to receive a physical before you can compete. All incoming freshman must complete the BrainBook Concussion course from the AIA. The course can be located at academy.azpreps365.com.
We are excited to begin Phase 1 and return our athletes back to sports for this season. All the Fall Coaches will be in contact with athletes in the upcoming days to discuss the times and groups that will be meeting at Walden Grove High School. If there are any questions or concern over the “Return to Play” Protocols, please contact Athletic Director Barry Cromer at email@example.com. Thank you and Welcome Back!!!
